We learned; We restored; We built

Together….

Together with Thomas “Spirit Tree” Green of the Neponset Band of Massachusett Tribe and Offshoots Productive Landscapes, and our Community

We learned: The morning of October 14th started with a blessing and decontamination of our land and water with Thomas Green of the Neponset Band of the Massachusetts Nation. We acknowledged the land and water with our brothers and sisters of our community. Off Shoots botanists spoke of the invasive plant species that crowd out our native plant species.

We restored: The community removed the Phragmites (common weed that surrounds the banks of the Malden River and does not host our wildlife well) and Bittersweet Vines (stranglers of our trees and shrubs) from our waterfront park site. The seed heads and berries were separated and put with the invasive trash that invades our shorelines.

We built: Our community pounded stakes and gathered the deflowered invasives plants and built a replicate of a fish weir that our native people invented to trap fish in the tidal waters (Pre-colonial days: Malden River was a tidal river surrounded by vibrant marshes and wetlands).
