Malden plays key role in Lower Mystic Vision
In June, the Resilient Mystic Collaborative published The Lower Mystic Waterfront Vision (June 2025), a unified strategy for revitalizing and protecting the Lower Mystic River waterfront — which spans seven municipalities: Boston, Chelsea, Everett, Malden, Medford, Somerville, and Revere. It addresses environmental, social, and economic goals for one of Greater Boston’s most climate-vulnerable regions.
“The Lower Mystic Waterfront Vision was developed in collaboration with the Resilient Mystic Collaborative, the Community Advisory Committee, local residents, and maritime industries and businesses. Project activities included design charrettes with municipal and stakeholder partners, one-on-one meetings with municipalities and businesses, dialogues with grassroots leaders, close work with a dedicated advisory group, and broad public engagement.”
Vision Overview
The Vision calls for a coordinated regional approach to waterfront planning that transcends municipal boundaries, aiming to balance:
Climate Resilience – Protect people and infrastructure from flooding, sea level rise, and heat.
Continuous Public Access – Create connected pathways and parks along the river from Medford and Malden through Everett and Chelsea to Boston.
Inclusive Open Space – Design public spaces that welcome all ages, cultures, and abilities, with amenities like restrooms, splash pads, trees, and cultural programming.
Thriving Working Waterfront – Preserve maritime industries, add innovation hubs, and ensure equitable access to jobs and training.
