Teamwork: Grit and Smiles on the Malden River

A major clean up of the Malden River

On April 6, 2025 over 85 Malden River Team Members gathered at Tufts Shoemaker Boathouse, River's Edge in Medford. This is our fourth Malden River Spring Scrub with Tufts University! Gentle Giant Rowing and Moving joined us last year!

Teams: Tisch College of Civic Life, Tufts University Rowing Teams, Gentle Giant Rowing Club, Gentle Giant Moving, Medford High School Rowing, Mystic River Watershed Association, and Friends of the Malden River

Actions: Collectively took out of the Malden River and its banks: 100 bags of trash, 13 truck and auto tires, shopping carts, buckets, barrels, and lots of other miscellaneous large items!

Win: Making a difference with removing trash from the Malden River! Let's work together to reduce the need for these huge river cleanups.

How can we all work together?

++++Reduce your use of single use plastics - the plastics escape proper disposal and are washed into the river through municipal storm drain systems.

++++Adopt A Storm Drain in your neighborhood! The Mystic River Watershed Association has initiated Adopt a Storm Drain in your neighborhood. Check it out: Adopt a Storm Drain in Malden ! Adopt a Storm Drain in Medford! Adopt a Storm Drain in Everett! It is easy to keep the street storm drain clear of trash, leaves, and other debris on the storm drains around your house or neighborhood.

++++ Be a good role model! Share your knowledge of how trash pollutes our waterways and oceans. Bring a nylon bag on your walks: Do you see a piece of trash? Thank you for picking it up. When possible, pack out your trash rather than use public waste barrels! Those barrels overfill quickly.

++++Do you see someone dumping illegally? Call 311 to report abuse of our public areas. Take photos of the license plate and evidence, if possible.

Always be careful and mindful of your safety

Thank you to Barr Foundation Climate Communications and Angela Rowlings for the on ground and on water photography! Photos speak volumes:

Off to the Trash Race!

And Done! for the moment - Unfortunately, there is always more trash to be eradicated from our waterways!
